Last Friday we review the Hario V60 drip scale so this week we decide to review the Bonavita Gooseneck Kettle. Over the past months, we have been reviewing some coffee equipment, like pour over devices, scales, coffee grinders an much more. But there is one equipment we never review, the gooseneck kettle.
If you already read some of our previous coffee articles, you already know how important a gooseneck kettle is. The ideal coffee brewing temperature is between 198 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit (92.2 ºC to 96.1 ºC), but traditional kettles stop heating once the water reaching boiling at 212 degrees (100 ºC). This is too hot for your freshly grounds coffee. At this temperature, you will burn your coffee and all the amazing flavor will be lost.
Another important feature in these kettles is the control you have in water flow. Having a controlled and consistent water flow is essential if you want to make a perfect cup of coffee.
Now that you know how important this equipment is let star with our Bonavita Gooseneck Kettle review.
Any pour over enthusiast knows that a good kettle is essential for manual brewing. The secret for a good kettle is in the design, especially in the gooseneck, that will offer the precision and control that you need to brew the perfect cup of coffee. With long, slender openings that restricts the flow, the bonavita gooseneck kettle, allows you to evenly wet your grounds, that result in a perfectly extracted coffee.
Another feature that we like a lot in the bonavita gooseneck kettle is the ability to control the temperature. This kettle comes with 6 preset temperatures that you can switch between by pressing the “Temp Set” button. But, the real magic lies in its ability to heat to any temperature you set, in one-degree increments, all the way up to boiling (212°F / 100°C). Whatever temp you set is stored in memory and recalled the next time you turn the kettle on.
Once the water reaches the temperature you set, the kettle will turn of off automatically. But if you press the “Hold” button to the kettle will maintain the temperature for an hour. This function works by continually turning the heating element on and off as needed.
This kettle also has a built-in timer, that is very useful because it allows you to watch your bloom and brew time. As you already know this is essential for making a good cup! To activate this feature you simply remove the bonavita from the control base and hit the “plus” button to start the countdown. We think this feature is a great addition because with this built-in timer you dont need to use a mobile phone or another device to control the brew time.
One thing that you have to keep in mind is the maintenance, although this equipment requires minimal attention there is something that you need to know. With the use, you may spot some colored spots in the bottom of the kettle, but don’t worry, it’s totally normal. Those spots usually mean it’s time to descale. When hot and cold water mix, it causes scale to build up. To clean it out, you simply need to grab some descale solution and run a cycle. Nothing more simple than this. Your kettle will look good as new!
