For us, there is nothing better than cast iron cookware! It is extremely durable, very practical to use, and most important is safer than many modern pieces of cookware. It is great for outdoor cooking and for everyday use in your home kitchen. We like cast iron so much that we already wrote an article with 5 reasons why every people should own cast iron cookware.
Nowadays there are a lot of new brands on the market, but Lodge continues to be one of our favorites. They produce incredibly durable cast iron cookware, at an affordable price. Saying that let’s go straight to the Lodge Cast Iron Skillet Review.
If you don’t own at least one cast iron skillet, there is something wrong with you! Nothing sears a steak like a cast iron skillet and nothing makes a crusty cornbread like cast iron.
If you look at the market for these skillets, the first thing that pops up is the different price range. You will find products that cost you 20 or 200 dollars (same size different brands). At this moment you are probably thinking that to buy a good cast iron skillet you have to sell a kidney, but fortunately, when it comes to cast iron, “the best” doesn’t mean “most expensive”. For us, Lodge produces one of the best cast iron skillets you can buy! They are very well made, and you don’t have to sell a kidney to buy one.
The skillets we tested are very affordable when compared with other brands. The 10.25 inch skillet is available for 27$, and the 12 inch model for 40$, and these models can almost always be found on sale for even less.
As we told you at the beginning of this review, we had the opportunity to test the 10.25 (26 cm) and 12 inches (30 cm) skillets, but you can go smaller up to 3.5 inches (9 cm) or bigger up to 17 inches (43 cm). For us, the 10.25 (26 cm) and 12 inches (30 cm) skillets are great sizes for everyday use, and you will be able to cook just about everything in these two skillets.
They are great for a couple of strip steaks, for burgers, a frittata, or for simmered beans. The only thing you should avoid cooking in these skillets is acidic food such as tomatoes, vinegar or wine. If you don’t have a proper seasoning you can end up with a metal flavor in your food.
Another advantage of using cast iron skillets is that it can be used on any heating surface including induction cooktops as well as under the grill and in the oven. In the end, there is nothing that you can’t do with a good cast iron skillet, take good care of it and he will last you a lifetime.
There are several reasons that make Lodge one of the best brands in the market. Not only are Lodge cookware made in the USA (a country with great tradition in cast iron), but they also come from a family-owned foundry that’s more than 100 years. When you buy this brand, you’re buying history but you’re also supporting workers in South Pittsburg, Tennessee.
All Lodge skillets come pre-seasoned, which means it’s ready to use right out of the box, and all are made of one piece of cast iron, including the handle. Since we are talking about the handles they are just right! The main is short, so it easily fits in the oven or on the grill. The helper handle on the other side makes it easy to lift the skillet.
Another feature that we like is the high sides, which make them perfect as baking pans for cornbread, biscuits, or cobbler. Because of their depth, they also give you plenty of room to heat oil for fried chicken.
Last, and our favorite reason is that every time you use a Lodge cast iron skillet it always gets better and better. So they are great to be passed from generation to generation.
Although Lodge sent us these skillets to test, they didn’t pay us anything to write this review. We really like their products, and we really use it every day. If you don’t have a cast iron skillet you should definitely consider to buy one, especially a Lodge Skillet.
The 10.25 (26 cm) and 12 inches (30 cm) skillets from Lodge classic series are an of the best skillets we ever owned. With proper use and maintenance, they will leave you a lifetime.
