After a month dedicated to coffee equipment reviews is time to move on and bring you something new. Today we decided to focus on the most important meal of the day, breakfast, and bring you the Smeg 2 Slice Toaster review.
Smeg is well known for its retro design and gorgeous colors, so it’s no surprise to find the same influences and attention to detail in this model. Available in 7 colors, the Smeg 2 slice toaster can fit in any kitchen decor. Though retro in appearance, this unit has many features found on contemporary toasters, such as a removable crumb tray and different settings like the bagel mode.
Like most Smeg products, this toaster has a classic design that looks good in any kitchen!
Build quality is another characteristic that is normally associated with Smeg. In fact, this toaster is another proof that this brand knows how to make excellent kitchen equipment. The outer casing of this model is really sturdy with absolutely no flex, which means that it was built with a thicker sheet of steel than what you’ll find in most other designs. The lever feels robust and pops up with pleasing speed and force. Below that is a big stop button, around which is the browning control dial.
The action of the dial is not as good as the level, it clicks as you turn it, but not in a pleasant way. The dial goes from one to six, but if you turn it right down there’s a reheat mode as well. On either side of the dial, you’ll find frozen bread and bagel mode buttons that illuminate when pressed. Around the back is the crumb tray, which pops in and out with a satisfying click.
In our tests, this model produced amazing toasts with nice crisp outsides and a soft slightly interior. In terms of appearance, bread faces were toasted almost perfectly even, with just a few light spots towards the bottom of most slices. But this minor issue is easily fixed by adjusting the toasting levels, from a lightly browned toast to blackened all around.
The performance of the bagel mode was by far the biggest surprise in this model. This mode transforms a plain old grocery store bagels into mouthwatering ambrosia. The toasted faces were almost perfectly even and the backsides were nice and warm. Slap on some cream cheese and you’ve got a spectacular, indulgent breakfast.
We also test the defrosting mode and the Smeg 2 Slice Toaster maintained its high toasting quality. We also test this mode with frozen waffles and pancakes and the results were also good as if using bread.
Our only complaint about this toaster is that the slices of toast came increasingly darker as we toasted one after another. This means that you will need to adjust the temperature every time you want to make a large number of toasts consecutively.

The brightly colored and the retro style aesthetic of the Smeg 2 slice toaster makes it an attractive accent on any countertop. But the best part is that it has a lot more to offer than just a beautiful design. It’s very well made and performed exceptionally well in our tests. It made incredibly evenly toast and blew us away with bagels so good that mere words can’t do them justice. The Smeg certainly isn’t cheap, and it doesn’t have the fancy leverless technology of the other high-end models that we are testing, but if you want the best toast and something that will look amazing in your kitchen, then the Smeg is for you.
This 2 slice toaster from Smeg, is a great looking toaster that not only makes amazing toasts but also leaves your kitchen incredible with its Retro Style Aesthetic.
