In this week’s cookbook review, we are back with some sweet and savory treats. After reviewing Midwest Made and Pastry love, in these past weeks, we decided to bring the recently released cookbook, The Pastry School by Julie Jones.

This book is a masterclass in preparing, baking and decorating pastry, from delicate tarts to comforting pies. Julie Jones is renowned for her highly decorative bakes packed with bold layers of flavor and texture. With his new book she is leading the pastry revival, believing that with a bit of patience and a love for food, anyone can create delicious, beautiful bakes at home.

A Pastry Masterclass

The Pastry School is a book that offers much more than just a few recipes. This is a comprehensive masterclass in pastry that will teach you everything you need to know to master sweet and savory pies, tarts and treats at home.

Julie starts this book with a comprehensive Pastry Recipes & Methods section that guides you through 10 different types of pastry with step-by-step instructions. These include loved classics such as Shortcrust and Hot Water, as well as a versatile Vegan and Gluten-free, that can be swapped in or out of recipes with a helpful Alternative Pastry Key.

The book is organized by food items, which makes it very easy to navigate. Chapters include Fruit, Cream & Cheese, Nuts, Vegetables, Meat & Fish and Crunch & Crumb, featuring more than 50 sweet and savory recipes.

Time to Eat Real Pastries

The love and care that Julie has for pastries is everywhere throughout The Pastry School. You’ll fell this when you read the intro or every time you read or make a recipe. We have already tried some recipes and we can safely say that they were written by a great pastry chef. They are easy to follow with detailed instructions that will allow you to do things you never thought you could do.

In each recipe, measurements are given in metric system units as well as in cups, and the temperatures are shown in Celsius and Fahrenheit. In addition, all recipes have a mouth-watering photograph that serves as a visual guide. The fact that all recipes have photos makes everything easier when it’s time to bake. There will be recipes, especially the more challenging ones, where a visual guide is essential.

The thing we love most in this book is that it has something for everyone. It has recipes for every skill level and it has flavors for every taste. If it is related to pies, tarts, or treat you’ll probably find it here.

Final Thoughts

The Pastry School is a fantastic cookbook that promises to make shop-bought pastries a thing of the past. This is a book that will teach you the fundamentals of pastry and take your skills to another level. The recipes are diverse, delicious, easy to follow. The 10 different types of pastry dough make this book accessible for everyone, including vegans and gluten intolerants.

If challenging your skills through delicious recipes is what you are looking for, this is the book for you. As we said at the beginning of this review, The Pastry School is not just a book, but also a masterclass!

Summary

The Pastry School is a fantastic cookbook that will teach everyone how to make delicious pies, tarts, and treats at Home.
